Pike and Shot

Finally finished a regiment of pike and shot. I'm finding painting these guys a bit heavy going, though I am generally pleased with the finish. It could be a while before I have a big battle ready to go. As a fan of Lion Rampant I picked up Pikeman's Lament, which will be perfect for playing skirmishes in the meantime. I already have enough figures to make a decent variety of Lament companies.

Table Top Sale

Sunday 20th May 2018

Every year, in May, my club runs a table-top sale. This is a car boot sale kind of event, with lots of different sellers and the chance to pick up bargains.

The sale will be at Lincombe Barn, Overndale Road, Downend, Bristol BS16 2RW on Sunday 20th May 2018.

The format will be similar to mainstream table top or car boot sale - we will supply the tables - you sell your own goods at prices set by yourself.

Charges are £10 per 6ft x 2ft table (approximate size). A maximum of 2 tables can be booked.

We anticipate having around 40 tables. They are offered on a first come, first served basis

This charge covers the table and entry for two people per table. If you wish to share a table between 3 people, then please enclose a further £4.00. (A maximum of 3 per table please).

Please note that only people with a sellers pass will be allowed in before the public opening time. The Barn will be open from 8:45am for sellers to set up their tables.

Although not planned this as a trade sale, wargames traders will be most welcome, especially if you wish to offer old or discontinued stock at cheap prices!

If people are interested in attending as a seller, please leave a comment and I'll get back to you.

If you just want to come along to browse and buy, all you need to do is turn up on the day.

Firelock Storming Party

I did this Firelock Storming Party from Warlord Games for Pike and Shotte. The two metal figures were very nice, but I was a bit disappointed with the lack of range of poses from the plastic. There is a single plastic pose with a choice between two pairs of arms. I found mixing these with the various (and also quite limited) poses in the Infantry Regiment set I could get a decent range of poses in the end. Though this was a bit fiddly as they are not designed to go together so I had to do a bit of cutting and filling.

Pike & Shotte test

After procrastinating for a good 6 months, I've decided to start a long-term English Civil War project, using Pike & Shotte. I think I want to do something with Hopton and Waller, and maybe have a decent stab at a historically accurate Battle of Lansdown (which is just down the road from me). I'm not used to bringing research and actual knowledge to my wargaming, so we'll see how that goes.

These are tests for some Royalist cavalry, and Hopton's regiment of foot. Warlord Games are having a third-off sale on their basic ECW Infantry and Cavalry regiments, so I now have enough plastic to keep me going for a long time.

Sword and Spear Demo

Our club put on a demo at the Barn's craft fair. We did a bit of a display and ran a game of Sword and Spear.

The game was a two vs two thing, which went pretty well. The Saracens lost a load of their horse archers on their right flank, but in a way they did their job coz their heavy cavalry came through, unscathed and ripped the flank apart.

It was an interesting result in that the Crusaders won 29 - 21 in Army Points. But looking at the table you could see the Saracens were probably better placed. So, I added up the build points left on the table and it came to 177 - 120 in the Saracens' favour, pretty much the exact opposite result.

It felt a bit wrong, and I might have a think about working out how to end S&S games in future, coz a few times I have felt the game has ended too early, and this time the result definitely didn't reflect what was happening on the pitch.

Also note the excellent, thematic dice bag, which I got from saddlegoose: http://glenbrookgames.co.uk.websitebuilder.prositehosting.co.uk/saddle-goose
